Flag day was established in 1916 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring June 14th the day for a national observance of the flag. In 1949 Congress passed a resolution officially declaring June 14th a national holiday to remember the flag. We now celebrate the entire week leading up to Flag Day with presidential proclamations, displaying the flag, flag related events, and even parades- the largest of which is held in Troy NY.
